The ICAR-Central Island Agricultural Research Institute in Port Blair, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, assisted Mr. Chintaharan Biswas, a forward-thinking mango farmer from Shaheed Dweep. They provided him with support in registering his unique farmer variety, known as 'Chinta Mango,' with the Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers' Rights Authority in New Delhi.
Chinta Mango holds the distinction of being the inaugural mango variety registered under the PPVFRA. During his recent visit to ICAR-CIARI, Port Blair, Dr. Himanshu Pathak, Secretary (DARE) & Director General (ICAR), presented the certificate to Mr. Biswas.
The Chinta Mango, belonging to the Mangifera indica species, is a cultivated mango variety distinguished by its unique purple hue in the peel during the unripened stage. ICAR-CIARI has undertaken efforts to characterize this genotype morphologically and biochemically. The fruits are notably large, weighing between 300-400g each, boasting delicious yellow pulp with a sweet taste and low fiber content, with an average TSS of 19.6oB. Additionally, this genotype exhibits the occurrence of polyembryonic seedlings, providing an added advantage for maintaining genotype purity through seed propagation. Phytochemical analysis of the fruit pulp reveals its richness in carotenoids, flavonoids, ascorbic acid, and antioxidant activity.
Under the guidance of Dr. Eaknath B. Chakurkar, Director of ICAR-CIARI, Port Blair, the registration procedure was facilitated.
